This Magazine on the Green Party

This Magazine covered Lawrence Gridin‘s post on Law is Cool regarding the election debates on their site.

This Magazine is is one of Canada’s longest-publishing alternative journals, in circulation for over 40 years.

Alternative media is increasingly citing blogs and websites as sources, and slowly mainstream media are doing the same.

Several contributors from Law is Cool have been interviewed by larger media outlets based on their work and contribution to the site.

Jim Johnston, Green Party candidate for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, also picked up on this post on the Green Party website.

Interview with Caitlin Rose of Fasken Martineau

Devin Johnston is continuing with the podcast series at Law is Cool.

His last episode features an interview by Omar Ha-Redeye with Caitlin Rose, a summer student at Fasken Martineau, who helped create the McGill Journal of Law and Health.

Devin continued this episode with interviews from various political representatives on environmental issues.

A recent report by the Sierra Club of Canada gave political parties the following grades for their environmental plan:

  • Bloc Québécois B
  • Conservative Party F
  • Green Party A-
  • Liberal Party B+
  • New Democratic Party B

Election Time (Again)

The writ has dropped, which means the troops will be rallied once again.

I’m adding some election related stuff to the side-bar.

If you don’t know I’m a Liberal, you probably don’t know me at all.

Despite what any of you might say, they are better than any of the other options, and miles ahead of the current ruling party.

Major issues for this election will be:

Any bickering over “leadership” is typical side-stepping from important issues and are only a diversion in this election, one that voters hopefully will not heed.

There are some nifty Liberal videos being uploaded on YouTube that I’ll rotate through on the sidebar as well.

Aren’t All Law Students “Mature?”

On the first day of school, Omar Ha-Redeye welcomed incoming first-year students at the Mature Students Reception during Orientation Week.

As President of the Mature Students Club, Omar related a common law school saying,

In 1L they scare you to death,
In 2L they work you to death,
In 3L they bore you to death.

He warned the students not to let others scare them during their first year, reminding them that many brought skills and experiences that their peers lacked.

Omar also thanked Lerners LLP for hosting the reception for the students.  The reception would also not have been possible without the assistance of the Orientation Week Committee.

The Dean of UWO Law, Ian Holloway, also gave a moving welcome, both at the Mature Students Reception, and to the entire incoming class.  Dean Holloway elaborated on the importance of lawyers in democratic societies,

Many of you will be familiar with the line from Shakespeare, “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”.  It’s generally taken as one of the early lawyer jokes – and as a sign of how long we’ve actually been unpopular, but the truth is that Shakespeare offered this as proof of the opposite. The passage, which is taken from Henry VI… is uttered by a character named “Dick the Butcher”. Dick is part of a gang led by a character named Jack Cade, whose goal is to stage a coup d’etat – to overthrow the government. The line – uttered as it was by a murderous bully – was intended by Shakespeare to highlight the precariousness of our tradition of the rule of law, and to make the point that the surest way to chaos and tyranny even then was to remove the guardians of independent thinking.

Back to School Today

Law school starts again today at the University of Western Ontario.

A few differences from first year – all courses are now only a semester, and courses are selected based on interest. Many courses also have an essay option, instead of a strict 100% exam marking scheme.

Course selections for this semester are:

  • Corporate Law
  • Healthcare Law and Policy
  • Evidence
  • Administrative Law

Join the Conversation Joins Publications

join the conversationThere’s a new addition to the sidebar under “Publications.”

This one is not something formally authored, but Join the Conversation: How to Engage Marketing-Weary Consumers with the Power of Community, Dialogue, and Partnership did use some of borrowed material in his book published last year, Join the Conversation: How to Engage Marketing-Weary Consumers with the Power of Community, Dialogue, and Partnership.

The source of the collaboration was a wiki entry a couple years ago on Constantin Basturea‘s The New PR entitled, What Should Every Company Be Monitoring?

Shel Holtz, Cameron Olthuis, Steve Rubel, and Jeremiah Owyang also had their hands in creating and edting the entry.

Nobody thought it would turn to print, but you never know what does these days. You can see a preview of it right around page 141.

As an interesting sidenote, you can now search “Omar Ha-Redeye” on Amazon and come up with this hit.

Womens Health in the Majority WorldSimilarly, Drs. Laurie Elit and Jean Chamberlain Froese (Editors) of McMaster University are added for their inclusion of a paper in their book, Women’s Health in the Majority World: Issues and Initiatives from Nova Publishers.

The paper was presented at the 8th Annual International Women’s and Children’s Health Symposium (IWCH) in Hamilton, Ontario on September 30, 2006. The theme of the conference was “Rebuilding Health Communities After Disaster and Displacement: Immigrant Refugee Women and Children in Canada and Abroad.”

A similar paper was previously presented in Dhaka, Bangaldesh at the 3rd International Conference on the Impact of Global Issues on Women & Children (2006). The conference was sponsored by McMaster University, and Omar Ha-Redeye received both the McMaster Graduate Student Association (GSA) Travel Grant and the Anne Hall Memorial Prize to help subsidize the costs of travel to present the paper there.

There will be a few more additions to the publications section in the coming weeks.
