Social Media Slides Posted

The slides from the social media session last week have been linked to or posted on Slaw, Law is Cool, and Social Media Mafia.

Devin Johnston pointed out an update that the Blogging Dippers were now the New Democrats Online, which was reflected on the uploaded slides.

Is Proruge the ‘New Black?’

Jaclyn Greenberg of  withmyba.com covers posts on why prorogue is a bad idea,

And today, my buddy over at Law is Cool, Omar Ha-Redeye points out that while these policies are off the table now, the fact that precedent has been set for a PM to prorogue parliament specifically to avoid a non-confidence vote (aka ask for time out just before being fired from his job), creates “danger” for future generations to come.

How dangerous? Well, that depends on how much you like democracy, I suppose. Omar links to the Regina Mom, who points out that Harper may be the first leader in Canada’s history to pull the stunt but he’s in good company around the world…

Why Prorogue is a Bad Idea

What if any time a leader faced a non-confidence vote they decided to send everyone home and hope they forget about things?

That’s basically what happened yesterday, and according to constitutional law experts, it sets a very dangerous precedent.

Here is the parliamentary precedent Harper is following:

1629 King Charles I in England
1799 Napoleon in France
1913: Victoriano Huerta in Mexico
1933: Adolf Hitler in Germany
1936 Francisco Franco in Spain
1939: Benito Mussolini in Italy
1973: Augusto Pinochet in Chile
2008: Steven Harper in Canada

And despite Dodd’s Corollary, this is probably worth viewing just for kick’s sake:

He blames the lawyers, of course.

They’re Talking about Me at the Legal Water Cooler

Heather Milligan was looking for suggestions on social media networks lawyers might want to consider.  She links to our About page on the Legal Watercooler for one of the more comprehensive lists around:

All about you

  • Create profiles on LinkedIn, Google Profiles, Facebook and Twitter. There are hundreds of others as well. Click here for a good list of what’s available.
  • Create your own blog that spotlights you and will help to differentiate you in the marketplace.

It’s good advice, and even better to know we’re ahead of the game.

Google Profiles was not one of the ones on our list, so we’re even happier for the suggestion.

The Lib-Dip Coalition

It’s gathering momentum, and the grassroots are proclaiming their support.

Here’s a tip Liberals could learn from Dippers, who are learning from Tories.

I just looooove the new Conservative grassroots communication tool for the ConBots. So helpful. I sent letters to the editors of all my local papers (see screenshot above)- right through their website. They did it all for me! And all I have to do is enter my postal code to figure out which radio stations to call and when.

Exam Time

There are lots of updates needed for this site to reflect various activities and contemporary political changes, but they’ll have to wait until mid-Dec. after exams are concluded.

Teaching Social Media at Schulich

Omar taught a class of seasoned marketers on social media tools and techniques in the political sphere.
