Day 1

Eat Dessert First – Using Social Media Channels to implement Company or Community Recovery Faster workshop by Bill DelGrosso, Director of Emergency Management for Professional Organization for Women’s Enrichment (EMPOWER).

Best Practices in Crisis Communications by Boyd Neil, Senior Vice President, and Jane Shapiro, National Practice Director, at Hill & Knowlton Canada.

Day 2

John Merkovsky spoke on Building Resiliency in the Face of Global Risks, and Scot Phelps
of Southern Connecticut State University shared Ten easy, cheap, or fast technologies you should know about.

What Hackers Don’t Want You to Know about Identity Management was shared by Jeff Crume, while Graham Walsh of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP presented Business Continuity and Risk Management: A Legal Perspective.

Prof. Martin Rudner of Carleton University gave a provocative talk entitled Communication, Collaboration, and Co-operation in Countering Terrorist Threats to Critical National Infrastructure.  What the talk gained through sensationalism it lost in accuracy and substance, and it would have little use in mitigating future threats.

One of the final talks for the day was given by K.C. Rondello on EMOC: Emergency Management On Campus — Student Assistance in University Disasters.

Day 3

The third day started with a plenary session by James Lukaszewski on How to Avoid Career-Defining Moments in Crisis: Manage The Victim Dimension, followed by a break-out session with Jeannette Sutton on Warning Systems, Risk Communication, and New Social Media: How Technological Innovation is Changing the Landscape for Disaster Communications.

Dana Libby shared some New Mapping Tools Aid in Response to the 2008 Hurricane Season, and Dan Hefkey spoke on some First Nations programs with Culturally Appropriate Emergency Management Programming.

The afternoon continued with David Tickner on Pandemic Tipping Points – planning for and responding to the collateral impacts of failing critical infrastructure and Applying recent lessons from the Indian Ocean to improving tsunami warning along Canada’s West Coast by Peter Anderson

Day 4

An international panel, with Peter Powers, David Parsons, Nathaniel Forbes, John Stagl, and Raph Dunham gave A Global Perspective on Resilience.

Patrick Helm spoke on a Systems Approach to National Security Risks.

Amit Yorand presented Taking the Uncertainty and Doubt (But Not the Fear) Out of Information Risk Management.

The closing plenary was given by Warren Faidley, author of the bestselling book, Storm Chaser.




New Legislation and Practice for Explosion Protection & Hazardous Locations

Omar Ha-Redeye covered the new amendments to the Hazardous Materials Information Review Act (HMIRA) for the 2009 Explosion Protection & Hazardous Locations Conference in Calgary.

The event was for the oil & gas, mining, processing and utilities industries.

Society of Nuclear Medicine 2009 Annual Meeting

Omar Ha-Redeye attended the Society of Nuclear Medicine‘s 2009 Annual Meeting in Toronto.
The conference provides continuing education credits required to maintain an American nuclear medicine technolgist license.  Omar Ha-Redeye is one of the few law students in Canada with a clinical background in health care services.

WCDEM 2009 – Day 3

Omar Ha-Redeye presented at the 2009 World Congress on Disaster and Emergency Medicine on A New Ethical Model for Examining Emergency Medicine.

A discussion followed between Dr. Peleg of Israel, who advocated a strictly utilitarian approach to emergency medicine, and Omar Ha-Redeye, who pointed out numerous exceptions where this approach had shortcomings.

Tomorrow’s Agenda: Canada’s Plan for Health Care

Ryerson University‘s School of Health Service Management hosted a symposium featuring various speakers on topical health policy issues.

Introductions were provided by Dr. Winston Isaac, the program’s Director. followed by Dr. Michael M. Rachlis speaking on a re-organized medicare focusing on prevention to improve wait times and chronic disease management.

Shelagh Maloney of Canada Health Infoway addressed the issue of implementing e-health in Canada.  Dr. Alan Hudson closed with a discussion on the Ontario Health System.

Ryerson University provides a unique second-entry Bachelor in Health Administration in Health Services Management (HSM) or Health Information Management (HIM), comprising largely of students with previous education and work experience in the health sector.

The flexible delivery format and the expertise among instructors and students means the school positions a considerable number of health care practitioners in the province for mid to upper level management positions in health institutions.




Critical Issues in Health Law: Case Law and Legislation Updates

The Health Law section of the Ontario Bar Association hosted an event on Critical Issues in Health Law: Case Law and Legislation Updates.

The event was co-hosted by Nyranne S. Martin and Michele M. Warner, both from Borden Ladner Gervais LLP.

Richard Steinecke of Steinecke Maciura LeBlanc, Barristers & Solicitors, spoke about Recent Amendments to the Regulated Health Professions Act.

Nina Bombier of Lenczner Slaght Royce Smith Griffin LLP provided an overview of Gore v. College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and talked about some of the upcoming statutes that could transform investigatory powers of the colleges.

Barbara J. Walker-Renshaw of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP presented her perspective on the 2008 SCC decision, Mustapha v. Culligan of Canada Ltd., and its implications in damages for mental distress.

Anne E. Posno, also of Lenczner Slaght Royce Smith Griffin LLP, discussed the duty of care to a fetus in two cases, Bovington v. Hergott and Paxton v. Ramji.

Finally, Tanya M. Goldberg of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and Megan B. McPhee of Kim Orr Barristers P.C. provided different perspectives on public health class actions, such as SARS and Maple Leaf.
