2010 New Calls to the Bar

The Ontario Bar Association (OBA) hosted a reception for new calls to the bar. Special guests included Chief Justice Annemarie Bonkalo of the Ontario Court of Justice, Chief Justice Heather Smith of the Superior Court of Justice, and Hon. Chris Bentley, Attorney-General of Ontario.

Social Media and Law Student Recruitment

Omar Ha-Redeye published an article in the October 2010 issue of the OBA Sole, Small Firm and General Practice newsletter, Volume 7, No. 1, entitled Social Media and Law Student Recruitment.

OBA Fall Council

Omar Ha-Redeye participated in the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) Fall Council Meeting as a Toronto Articling Student Ambassador representative of the Student Division Executive (SDE).

This year’s meeting was held at the Taboo resort in Muskoka.




Briefly Speaking – October 2010

The October 2010 issue of Briefly Speaking, the monthly magazine of the Ontario Bar Association, features a photo on page 36 of Omar Ha-Redeye at the Young Lawyers Division – Central fundraiser at the Blue Jays game on July 8, 2010. OBA Award for Excellence in Civil Litigation

The 2010 Ontario Bar Association (OBA) Award for Excellence in Civil Litigation went to Bonnie A. Tough of
Tough & Podrebarac LLP.

Award and ceremony was held at The Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. Keynote speech was presented by Harvey Strosberg Q.C. of Sutts, Strosberg LLP.

The New Auto Insurance Regime

Starting September 1, 2010, new amendments to the automobile insurance system were enacted affecting the medical and care benefits that litigants can receive in motor vehicle accidents.

The Law Society of Upper Canada and the Ontario Bar Association hosted a session, The New Auto Insurance Regime – Practical Strategies for Radical Change.

Speakers included John A. McLeish and Dale V. Orlando of McLeish Orlando LLP, and Roger G. Oatley and James L. Vigmond of Oatley, Vigmond LLP.

The topics discussed included the definition of minor and catastrophic injuries,and rehabilitation, housekeeping, caregiver and attendant care benefits.

The new Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS)  can be found in Ontario Regulation 34/10 to the Insurance Act.  A table of time periods is available through Taran Virtual Associates.

Fall OBA Student Council Meeting

The Ontario Bar Association (OBA) held its Fall meeting for the Student Division Executive to discuss various initiatives for the upcoming year.

Omar Ha-Redeye is an articling student representative for the area of Toronto for 2010-2011.

OBA YLD Central Blue Jays Game

The Central Chapter of the Young Lawyer’s Division of the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) hosted a fundraiser for the Jays Care Foundation at the Rogers Centre. The Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 8-1, with 5 home-runs.

The event was sponsored by Lawyer Locate, a lawyer referral service, Canadian Lawyer, Law Times, Title Plus, Advocate Placement, and Radical Stitches.
